Vocalist, bass guitarist, songwriter Glenn Hughes is a true original. No other rock musician has carved such a distinctive style blending the finest elements of hard rock, soul and funk. That astonishing voice is Hughes’ calling card. He’s known as a singer’s singer. Stevie Wonder once called Hughes his favourite white singer.

Hughes, a native of Cannock, England, absorbed all kinds of influences, including early British hard rock, the Beatles and, most importantly, American soul and R&B. The sleek Motown sound from Detroit and the gritty Stax/Volt sound from Memphis left their mark on him.

The first important band Hughes was a member of that achieved notable success was Trapeze. He later joined trailblazing Deep Purple with Ritchie Blackmore and co. In the halcyon days, Purple headlined at the famous California Jam in front of 250,000 and toured the world on their own Boeing jet plane, ‘The Starship’. All of this was accompanied by cocaine psychosis, crack addiction and other excesses, before Hughes survived a clean-up-or-die crisis, and embarked on a reinvigorated solo career enriched by a survivor’s wisdom.

In addition to a prolific and successful solo career, more commercial recognition came when the KLF dubbed him ‘The Voice of Rock‘, featuring him on their international best selling hit single ‘America – What Time is Love?’. Glenn has also worked with the Red Hot Chili Peppers‘ Chad Smith and John Frusciante. One of the most important collaborations in Hughes’ career was when he began working with Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi on his first solo album ‘Seventh Star’. Glenn’s latest album, ‘First Underground Nuclear Kitchen‘, is the latest chapter in an extraordinary musical evolution, and is quite possibly the most compelling and positive musical statement in a distinguished career.

2010 saw Glenn recording and touring in a new supergroup project, Black Country Communion with guitar star Joe Bonamassa, keys player Derek Sherinian (Dream Theatre) and drummer Jason Bonham, son of the late Led Zeppelin legend John Bonham. The band released their debut album produced by Kevin Shirley (Aerosmith, Iron Maiden, Black Crowes, Page and Plant, Journey etc).

Glenn Hughes: The Autobiography From Deep Purple To Black Country Communion‘ is soon to be released. Glenn talks us through this whirlwind of a life with unflinching honesty and good humour.
