Album Description
GLENN HUGHES has been called the "Voice of Rock". His career has spanned more than four decades, having played with Deep Purple, Trapeze and Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi, in addition to establishing a highly regarded solo identity. For his first solo show in Australia, on the 17th June 2006 at famed Sydney venue The Basement, Hughes brought his unique brand of rock-funk to a new audience taking in material from his solo albums like 1977's Play Me Out ('I Found A Woman'), to 2005's Soul Mover and his newest release Music For The Divine (a passionate cover of the Moody Blues' classic 'Nights In White Satin', 'This Is How I Feel'). On top of that, Hughes returns to his legendary Deep Purple days for 'This Time Around', 'You Keep On Moving', an astonishing rendition of 'Mistreated' and a duet with celebrated Aussie Rock front man Jimmy Barnes on 'Gettin' Tighter'. 5 out of 5 stars Great DVD from the Voice of Rock!   May 5, 2009

I was reluctant to buy this DVD for quite some time. After renting it on Netflix I had to own it. The production is great! Very up close and personal and stripped down. All acoustic except for Glenn's bass from time to time. No drums. I was very impressed with I Found a Woman from Play Me Out. I had never heard a song off that record before. The mini-orchestra section is fantastic. If you have been holding out on buying this I strongly recommend you pick it up. The bonus disc has great footage of Glenn, Chad, and co making 'Music for the Divine'.

Glenn Hughes is (in my humble opinion) one of the most incredibly talented musicians on the scene today. Forget the fact that he's been creating and sharing his amazing music for over 30 years, he actually get's better with each new project he releases. As for this particular DVD, I feel that disc one of this set misses the mark completely. Glenn's talents excel in his absolute power to convey tangible emotion through funk and heavy rock, both of which are missing in this setting. In my opinion, the stripped down "acoustic" concert here doesn't come close (in feeling and energy) to the physically emotional experience he brings with the full band approach. Not that there is anything wrong with the performances here, Glenn is so very talented, but the acoustic setting of this concert forces him to hold back accordingly when the very thing that makes him so damn funky is the energy he releases in his songs.

All is not lost, Disc 2 is full of insightful bonus material with Glenn and Chad commenting on tracks from the album "Music For The Divine" whilst multi-track playbacks isolate different elements within the mix. Priceless footage here. This DVD definately makes the set worth buying. A real personal look at the artists.

Glenn if you happen to read this, I'd love to produce your next video for you. It would feature only the funkiest/edgy songs from your incredible solo career, straight up with the funky-vibe that only Papa G can deliver...

you see, it was only an instance when i first listened to one of his songs called "Phoenix Rising" from album "Phenomena" when i said to myself behold, Glenn Hughes is the one who has the voice of the rock and rocks the rock world. then i kept buying most of his albums. Hughes & Turner Project rocks too. i can't stop listening to "Road to Hell". not that i love the road to hell but the music and his voice makes the difference.

Firstly let me say that this is a very cool DVD. Hughes sings amazing with no effects! My opinion's that may sound negative are only eclipsed by the incredible heavy-rock electric perfomance I saw at the Whisky in LA with Chad Smith about 8 months ago. That gig was so amazing that I cannot help but wonder why he didn't film that. (or the NY gig) instead of these acoustic performances. Many fans were dissapointed with the very strange first DVD Hughes put out a few years ago which had a strange video effect that sort of ruined the effect of the performances. The image and sound quality on this dvd are great but it looks like a small lounge act (Maybe 100 people) and has a strange feel as though you are watching someone on the downside of their career. The audience is not very animated..especially for the first few tunes. The performance is great by Glenn..especially the songs with the string section and the amazing "Frail". (I think "Frail" is one of the greatest tunes he has ever done) The guitarist is a little out of his element on acoustic..he is way better on electric, but still it is good.(Tough to do "Mistreated" on an acoustic and the delay on the guitar is a tad strange) The song selections arent my ultimate choices but Glenn's performance rises above most personal wishes I had for this DVD. (Nice to hear the "Play me out" selections) I noticed one strange moment where he may have dropped in a post- performance vocal phrase but cannot be sure. But considering he has no noticable effects on his voice it is stunning. I dissagree with the other reviewer about the extras. It's mostly Glenn and Chad in behind the mixing desk discussing segments of tunes. Normally this would be cool but Glenn is such a serious looking guy that he doesnt come accross that well for the camera. Having said that...Let me tell you though..this is one hell of a nice guy as I did meet him at the Whiskey and he is extremely humble and "non-rock star". So, the guy is great but I have to be honest and say this is not the ultimate DVD for me. I need a well done electric one to right the wrongs of that "Soulfully Live" thing from several years ago. There is plenty here to appreciate and I thank him for making this available to us. Mr Hughes..you are soooo talented. Oh..and Chad Smith is just immense..one of the greatest natural drummers around today..and he too is an extremely nice person...Thank you for working with Glenn Hughes! >>> 5 stars because the guy just deserves it.

5 out of 5 stars A "must have" for all fans of GLENN HUGHES and his music...   October 25, 2007

WOW - what can I say....this is the GLENN HUGHES disc (DVD) we've all been waiting on - the performances are just jaw dropping and the 2+ hour bonus material is just as captivating.

The sound is just awesome - it's so good to have a close-up performance as raw and "in the flesh" wafting through in 5.1 Surround.

JJ Marsh and Lachlan Doley are in fine form too and the string quartet add that extra special element to songs, such as 'Frail', 'This Is How I Feel' and 'The Divine' to name just a couple. Would of loved a bit more of the electric Rome gig on the bonus disc, but I'm a bit biased on that one, since I was in attendance on the night.

The in-studio 'Music For The Divine' song commentaries were very insightful and it was an education to hear the different layers of each track...and Chad Smith is right, GLENN's bits on 'Nights In White Satin', are just jaw dropping (did I say that again)!

Well worth the wait - a great job all round - looking forward to the next one!
