4 out of 5 stars Metal Up   March 15, 2008

Pretty good, not as good as IOMMI, but pretty good. Good chemistry with Tony and Glenn Hughes. Quality of the sound is suspect but a good rocking CD.

5 out of 5 stars incredible gem   March 9, 2008
HELLDORADO69 (Houston, TX)
I have been debating on whether or not to buy this cd for the last 3 years. I liked some of the other Hughes material such as the record he made with Thrall (Hughes/Thrall) and his rendition with Kevin DuBrow on Evil Woman. I am blown away. This is a powerful cd full of melodies and great guitar riffs. I don't know how anyone can hear this cd and not give it the maximum rating. This is the direction that Iommi has wanted to take Sabbath in for a long time and now I think he will with Dio back out front. It takes a singer like Hughes or Dio to sing over these kind of songs. These are not the kind of songs that Iommi would have been able to submit for an Ozzy recording because of his limitations and in the past when singers other than Ozzy or Dio (Tony Martin) fronted Sabbath, no one really cared. This cd is a great snapshot of Hughes and Iommi's abilities to create incredible heavy rock music out of thin air. I am impressed.

4 out of 5 stars Iommi - The Lost Album From 1996   May 21, 2007

Tony Iommi, of course, is one of the founding members of Black Sabbath and one of the original heavy metal guitar gods. The recordings on this disc were actually done back in 1996 when Iommi and former Deep Purple vocalist / bassist Glenn Hughes got together to record an album that unfortunately was never released. Finally in 2004 Sanctuary records put these recordings out and they are indeed a worthwhile release. Hughes and Iommi had previously worked together under the Black Sabbath moniker for the "7th Star" album and the tracks here have been available for years under the bootleg title "8th Star". I have never heard the boot versions, but apparently things have been cleaned up, additional drums recorded, along with a few other tweaks to the material. Overall this is a very nice hard rock disc. Iommi and Hugh's musical styles are very different, but they blend together here to make a unique combination of Iommi's heavy down low guitar style, and Hughes more upbeat funk / soul approach. I would think that fans of either of these two legendary artists would enjoy this album.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD - Iommi Hughes at their Best!   March 30, 2007
A. Comeaux (Baton Rouge, LA USA)
Great CD with Glenn Hughes singing with a very bluesy, soulful style reminiscent of Paul Rodgers (Bad Company). In fact, if you listen closely you will hear some very clear signature vocal stunts and riffs that are Rodger originals - which is great - cuz Paul is certainly also one of the best. Iommi, what can you say, he doesn't take an album "off" - this is no exception. All tracks are strong and memorable. Iommi is starting his Dio / Heaven & Hell tour as of this date; but what about a Hughes / Iommi tour - perhaps in smaller venues? I don't know if they could fill arenas under Iommi/Hughes, but "wow" wouldn't it be great to see these guys in smaller clubs. I guess I'm dreaming. I suppose if you are going to run around the globe putting on shows, you might as well make as much money as possible while doing it. So, we can dream.

5 out of 5 stars YES. BUY IT.   January 5, 2007

I've heard from other people who had the 1996 DEP bootlegs that these tracks were out of this world. Now that I've bought the CD, I can say, yes, they are.

Buy this album. Please encourage Iommi and Hughes to continue working together.

This disc is heavy and loaded for bear. "Gone" leads off the action - I loved Hughes' version of it on his R.O.C.K. CD, and this version is just as good as his. "I'm Not the Same Man" has to be my favorite of a great lot on this CD. Hughes' vocals are strong and Iommi's in top form. It's great heavy rock. No, it's not Black Sabbath, but not everything Iommi does has to be Black Sabbath. If you like a real singer in front of your metal and already bought everything Dio made, get this album.
