5 out of 5 stars Glenn finally gets to stretch out   May 9, 2003

Following from the split of Deep Purple Glenn Hughes recorded
this album of the soul funk which was so much a part of him that
didn't get to be aired during his Deep Purple tenure.
Be warned, this is not a rock album. If you're looking for
screaming guitars and huge drums forget it. This is a showcase
for Glenn's amazing vocal ability and all the way through you
can hear he's having fun with it.One of the best albums ever
by THE best male vocalist modern music has seen.

1 out of 5 stars Glenn, you better stick to rock!   March 24, 2003

Glenn Hughes (ex Trapeze, ex Deep Purple, ex Black Sabbath) have released a lot of solo albums with different musical styles. This one "Play me out" have a clear funk and soul approach, but it's far from good. Even `tho I love Glenn Hughes' voice, I think this direction is totally wrong - the songs just ain't no good. I strongly advise you to pre-listen to this one before buying.

If there is one Glenn Hughes album you should have, it's this one.Released not long after Purple's split, this album contains the best tracks Hughes has ever written and arranged. With his old-Trapeze friends,Mel Galley and Dave Holland among many guests, glenn Hughes explores a crystal-clear, complex funk rock music.Completely different from his early works or from what he'll do after.PLAY ME OUT is the album of a free musician-or so it feel like-Free for the PURPLE or The god of voice of hard rock sticker that is still following him.
It is almost if like during the composing and recording of this album time stopped and Hughes got in connection with THE soul of soul...maybe with Tommy Bolin-On Play me out lot of the arrangements remind us of BOLIN's solo albums-Female backing vocals, Horns, percussion but all very subtle.
SPACE HIGH...an inspired funk song-the title says it all, is just one pearl among many others on this album.
For the tracks 11 to 14, I don't have a clue if they're good or not as I own another version of this cd with other bonus tracks-some disco [stuff] better left unreleased.
Anyway, Play me out deserves its 5 stars, if not with the bonus tracks, the way Hughes intended it to be.
FUNK, SOUL , DEEP but not purple, VIBRANT , BRILLIANT, enough?

4 out of 5 stars it's not deep purple, thank god   June 28, 2000

this album was released at the time of the fusion jazz crossover. it's way more funky than deep purple. i am a purple fan, second generation, but the other solo projects by ex-purple mates are just imitations of the real thing. this album is all about the late 70's rock- funk. you have to develop a taste if it's your first glenn hughes album. his voice has great range and the band is very rhythmic. it's all about the groove.

5 out of 5 stars Can You Feel It?   June 23, 2000

I can. Don't let Danny t's review scare you away. If you have an ounce of funk in your little finger, you're gonna need this. "Trying" to be Stevie Wonder? Not hardly. The guy probably sounds like this when he calls the cats in for dinner: he was born with it. Of COURSE Glenn's rock stuff is great:he is the Voice of Rock. But if you want to know what is in his SOUL, then you'd better pick this up.
