Lightbulb Any More Swings? Trapeze

Don't mean to be so retro...but...

It's been 10 years since Threshold re-released the 3 Classic Trapeze albums on CD (Plus the High Flyer Compilation). Do you think anything else will ever be in the works with this material? I know it's unlikely that they will be released again by Threshold anyway- but another compilation? Why not? I was never happy with the High Flyer/Final Swing compilations- way too many greats songs that were not included. (Keepin Time, Way Back to the Bone, and of course Glenn's Seafull for example) I would love to see a box set put together, and really done right. I would like to see all of the Trapeze line-ups included- which I know would be difficult (if not impossible) with all the companies and rights involved. There was 2003's "On the High Wire" that included most of thier era's- but only live music from the "Way Back to the Bone" CD was done by the classic line-up. With the current surge in Hughes' interest of late, and some younger people having the chance to learn of Glenn's merits- maybe there is a market for old fans and new? Things could always be pulled out of the closet as a "bonus" for the old and a proper collection of material and packaging that would really put the band "Trapeze" into a proper perspective as to their great musical contributions for the new.
Most of us know that a potential comback opertunity awaits Mel, and unfortunately, Dave may have ruined his rights to any benifits from another release, but is it possible that he has family that deserves the benifits? Anyway, I know it's just another fantasy-like thought, but I'd really like to see it happen. I have made many Trapeze compilations for myself over the years- but if I were in charge of the song choices, it would look something like this:

A nicely packaged 3 CD Box set -might as well really dream, and include a live footage DVD as a 4th disk!

DISK ONE

It's Only a Dream
Nancy Grey
Another Day
Send Me No More Letters
Coast to Coast
Good Love (gosh I wish Glenn would re-do this song!)
Will Our Love End (or this one!)
Chances (Warner Bros. 1974 Glenn with no credit)
What is a Woman's Role
Jury
Seafull

DISK TWO

You are the Music
Black Cloud
Wings
Your Love is Alright
Touch My Life
Medusa
Loser
Keeping Time
Way Back to the Bone
Dat's It

DISK THREE

Midnight Flyer
Running
Turn It On
Feel it Inside
Take it Down
Take Good Care
Starbreaker
Nothin's for Nothing (1974 with Glenn)
Hold On
Back Street Love
Sunny Side of the Street

Anyone else out there old enough, or old-school enough to appreciate a new Trapeze release?

Mark

Hi Mark,

Lemon Recordings (a sub-label of RPM in the UK) have reissued the three studio Albums. I haven't heard those versions yet, still have the Threshold CDs and an original vinyl copy of The Final Swing.

You can find out more about these reissues here:

Cheers,
Christian

Hi Christian!

Thanks for the link- It appears that the first and third albums were the ones that were re-issued. That's strange that they would go after the first before "Medusa" (if not all three). Maybe that was all that was available through that site? I have two copies of "The Final Swing" on vinyl. One is completely wore out from playing it so much! The other is sealed up for collectability. I've only got one copy each of the "Hot Wire" and Warner Brothers "Trapeze" album. Both appear to be pretty collectable. "Trapeze" (WB) really caught me by surprise when I saw it on the shelf upon it's release in 74/5? I really believed that the Final Swing would be the final! I was elated to hear Glenn's voice on a couple tracks. I am not surprised that a smaller company would release these CD's again. And unfortunately, we'll likely never see a comprehensive collection available either

Mark,

Medusa was reissued by the same label - interesting that they didn't put that on the website. My local specialist reissue CD store carries all three of them.

Just went through the vinyl in the shelf to check on my Trapeze LP records. While the cover of The Final Swing is a little worn (nothing serious, just the usual storage and a little ring wear), the vinyl is shiny and excellent. And the Warner Bros. Album is there too, a fantastic copy, near mint! Haven't taken them out in a long time!

The On The High Wire CD was a nice idea by Castle, but I agree with you - I don't think that any label would go beyond that point and release a comprehensive collection.

Cheers,
Christian

Oh, and there's Pat Travers' Makin' Magic album right next to them! I'm rediscovering things I haven't seen or even been listening too quite some time....

No - not that I know of -unfortunately. All the live footage I've seen has been in the 90's.

These bootlegs are of the reuniting of the original line up? If they are of the 1970's please send me a private message!

Icon47 The Trapeze box set

Hey Mark,

Great thread....just wanted to get a few thoughts in here.

The question of a Trapeze box set was broached to Tom Galley in a web chat. his response was just as you wrote in your first post; it would take a lot of work and time to sort out the licensing and clearances with the various companies that Trapeze recorded for. But with the right team on the job it could happen! And..it SHOULD happen!

You mentioned "Good Love" which is one of my all time faves. To walk through the halls of the Hard Rock Hotel in March 2003 and hear that song wafting through the air on the PA was chrome plated cool! And to find out from the man himself the story behind the song's history was that much sweeter.

As for footage of the band during their career...does anyone know what might exist? I have read of video done during the 90's reunion shows....just wonder if any film footage exists from the early years.

This would have to be a true labor of love...like the "Ultimate Tommy" box set. Remember that so long ago? Little if any of Tommy's material was available on CD back in 1989 so that box was a treasure chest!! Sitting here in my room in 2005, I can take solace in the fact that every official release Tommy played on is available and a mother lode of unreleased stuff is out there for our enjoyment , largely due to the work of the Tommy Bolin Archives.

Trapeze deserves no less

Hey Bill!

What a simple beautifully written song "Good Love" is... A great showcase for the soulful VOICE! I rank it right up there with "Coast to Coast" and "What is a Woman's Role". I guess you and I are some of the few old timers still on here!

Please share with me (us) what Glenn had to say about this song. I too, spoke to him about it back in 1999. I of course asked him (or suggested) a remake as a bonus like he was throwing on most of his albums back then. I also asked about it live- but, no chance because it wouldn't work with-out the horn arrangement.

I am very grateful for what the Tommy Bolin Archives (Mike and Jamie) did for his fans -and to make sure the music was available for us. For me it's even a bigger deal because if it wasn't for the Archives, I most likely would not have had the chance to meet Glenn at all! (Tommy Bolin Tribute Tour) I have the 14? CD Box set "Fever" from which they pulled a lot of their material- and I'd say they did a very fine job!

I have the video of the St. Louis show- I think it was done on a rotating stage, audio of an Atlanta show. These were both in support of the Threshold re-releases -I'm pretty sure (with Craig Erickson). And I think the video of the Ray Gillan tribute? I hope to transfer this stuff over to DVD this summer. I would really love to have/or see a video of the famous Houston show back in 1972- or the Dallas show that yielded us the Live release "Way Back to the Bone". But I guess nothing exists ?
