Icon34 Queen and Paul Rodgers

Christ I'm getting excited about this gig coming up.... getting to see my idol Roger Taylor again is one thing, but he also sings two and a half songs of the set to keep me happy. I've been a critic of Paul Rodgers in the past but I've since heard him sing "We Will Rock You", "We Are The Champions" and "Tie Your Mother Down" and I thought he sounded great!

Anybody else excited or are more people in the the "No Queen without Freddie" camp?

I was skeptical but all the reports say this is the real deal and is happening...Sounds like it's a pretty amazing combination.

I went to the fan club show at the Brixton Academy in London and it was excellent and also very moving in places.

Paul Rodgers is ok and hopefully will have learnt all the words and the tunes to certain songs (A Kind Of Magic, I Want To Break Free for example).

Brian May's guitar playing is awesome and Roger Taylor managed to play the drums like a demon for the whole 2 hour show.

I won't spoil it if anybody is going to see one of the shows on the tour but...Freddie does sing!!

Most of the reviews in the press seem to agree it actually works pretty well.
Rodgers is best on the "proper" rock songs and not so good some of the others.

I think everyone will agree that replacing Freddie is impossible but if the other two want to keep playing Queen stuff then why not as Queen rather than May & Taylor. Its no different to the Thin Lizzy without Lynott situation, Floyd without Waters, Sabbath without Ozzy, Priest without Halford etc etc etc.

Bring back Rod Evans to Purple

I really hoped Jeff Scott Soto would get the gig but for whatever reason they've picked Paul Rodgers. Still, at least there's no chance of Freddie comparisons because Rodgers has a pretty influencial style himself. What bugged me was on a Queen fan site I mentioned Jeff Scott Soto and was met with "who?!?!" which I expected. Then when Glenn sang "Stone Cold Crazy" with Brian and Roger last year I went nuts over it and was met with "Who?" And finally Paul Rodgers comes along and damn if I aren't hearing "So who is he again?" and "Oh, that guy who sang the song on the chewing gum advert..." "Couldn't they have got Robie Williams?" HELP ME!

That's one thing that separates us GHCP's from the rest of the boards out there. Some of Queen's have a large percentage of people who listen to nobody BUT Queen. Check out Foreigner's board when they vote for "best singer ever" and Lou Gramm is always number one.... "even now". I'm sorry, but that's bollocks. You'd be shocked at how many people on that board didn't know who JLT was! Here you get good civilised discussion about all kinds of music and people tend to know what they're talking about. It's good to be back!

HI James,

Make you sound like an egomaniac? Me? Lol!
I KNOW you're the great one, there is no other!

On the subject of Queen though, I have to admit, when we went to last years SAS show in Surrey we met a crowd of Queen fans who, as you said, mustn't listen to anyone else but Queen. Who is the greatest guitarist in the world? Brian May of course. They were so narrow minded in their views, so blinkered to what else was out there, it was scary!
They had the cheek to insult US for our musical taste!
Don't get me wrong, I've been a fan of Queen for many, many years, but I don't think they are the best band in the world! (That would probably be Deep Purple, Come Taste the Band era! Lol!)

By the way James, never forget the words of the aforementioned Mr. Lewis- It's Hip to be Square!

Are you saying I'm square Sue? Oh dear. Oh dear oh dear...

Many thanks for the birthday wishes Grace! I used a big chunk of wealth to buy my freedom back off the gypsies so I'll be back online for the forseeable. I got a bulk buy of pegs and lucky heather to seal the deal but it was worth it.

And just to say I love Queen, I love Roger Taylor more, but I don't think they're the best band ever. They're a contender but I think it's impossible to pick one band. If people are interested in hearing Paul Rodgers with Queen, check out the attachment - the Hall of Fame performance that ended up sparking a full tour!

The spark was the Fender Strat 50th Anniversary concert at Wembley, which I also attended. Paul Rodgers and Brian May performed together. They decided it felt good and needed a drummer...enter the excellent Roger Taylor. The Hall of Fame performance "cemented" their union!!

As regards Queen fans...don't we all believe that Glenn is the greatest vocalist ever? We're not much different to them really

Hi James
Thanks for the clip - good quality, as you would expect & Paul's vocal was OK but you obviously have to make comparisons with Freddie. Do you know if 'Alright Now' sounded OK?

More recently it would seem that the Vatican were none too happy that Monday(?) night's concert in Rome wasn't cancelled out of respect for the Pope.

Cheers
Ben

Hey Ben,

When I heard 'All Right Now' it sounded great. I'd've posted that too but I don't have a complete version of it. Roll on the show!!!!

Have seen Rodgers numerous times, but haven't seen Queen since the Uris Theater as an opener for Mott the Hoople. Also great to see Danny Miranda is playing bass for the "new" Queen. Being a big BOC fan I am glad he was picked for such a huge role. Too bad those of us in the US will just be dreaming of those great shows many of you are getting to see.

Their version of All Right Now is pretty good, Brian May extends the solo a litlle but apart from that it is pretty faithful to the original.

They also play Free's Little Bit Of Love and Bad Co's Seagull, Can't Get Enough and Feel Like Making Love.

Brian May has said that they are planning to do dates in America later this year...if all goes well in Europe.

Thanks for the clip!

Looks like I have to go and see the show - it's sold out, of course... - a friend of mine works for EMI, so he might be able to get tickets - I hope!?!

At least the concert is not in Woergl, but here in Vienna where I live

Thanks again for the clip, Rodgers really sounds great (and the band too

Cheers,
Chris
