Glover: No to Burn Remaster

I can't say I blame him, Roger Glover has declined to work on the Burn remastering project and presumably Stormbringer and (if they find the lost tapes CTTB). Glenn if you are reading this perhaps you will give thoughts to working on this remaster even in a small advisory role a strong consideration. As I was saying in some other post, it's no accident your records always sound great. How exciting and awesome for us fans it would be if you could help clean up great albums like Burn. Surely those last three albums deserve the remastering attention that all other DP albums have been getting. These days I get more inspiration from those MK3 and 4 era albums then any other Purple albums.

It was always likely that the critical and commercial success of the EMI remastered Deep Purple albums would continue with the three remaining studio albums. EMI asked Roger Glover to oversee work on the Burn reissue. After talking with Ian Paice and Jon Lord it emerged that they were happy for him to do so. However, Roger Glover has decided not to get involved in the Burn remastering project after all, according to EMI's reissue department. We'll keep you updated on this as soon as we have more details.

If Glenn decides to distance himself from the BURN remaster, I for one will be disappointed. In the interview I conducted with him six months ago, Glenn stated how much he'd love to do it. Not to mention it's one of the most revered albums of his career. Well, Glenn?

I'm sure Glenn would love to do it, but he's probably as busy now then he's ever been. What with SITKOR, then HTP 2, the much prolonged Hughes/Thrall 2, VOCR and gigs Stateside, the sessions he does for people, Shape 68 lurking in the background, all the radio appearences he's been busy with for HTP, would it be possible?
I'd like Glenn to remaster Burn but not at the cost of prolonging releases from him when he's at the most prolific point of his career. David Coverdale would be the next best thing in my opinion as he was on the CD and he's a cracking producer. Failing that, get an outside producer with no Purple connection whatsoever who could really kick some life into the sound, like Roy Thomas Baker. His work on Queen's stuff is awesome. Remember, there's no real bonus with the Burn remaster other than the improved sound.

Hi guys. It is supposed to have one extra track - Coronarias Redig.

As it's a remaster rather than remix, I'm not sure how much it really matters who does it beyond a certain point. I'm no expert, but producing & engineering a recording are quite different from mastering surely?

I certainly can't see EMI spending money bringing in a 'name' with no Purple connection. My guess is they would only even pay 'Purple-people' like Rog or Glenn to do it because their involvement adds to the attraction for Purple fans & may sell more beans...

I also agree with James that although any Glenn involvement would be nice, in the scheme of things I'd rather he spent time on new Glenn product!

I would strongly and highly doubt Coverdale would get anywhere near this. For starters, he absolutely despises Simon Robinson, says he has no business being involved in these reissues and no experience to be dealing with them. I was quite surprised to hear this after I asked David about Simon on DC's website. On the DPAS QandA it SR said Ian Gillan also dislikes Simon. Why is beyond me, because I think SR does a fantastic job with this stuff. The other thing is David is really not very into having much to do with his DP days the way Glenn does. It was a miracle he sang Burn with GH three years ago. The only other DC DP track he's done recently since leaving Purple was Soldier of Fortune during the Restless Heart era.

Add Joe Lynn Turner to the "I hate Simon Robinson" list. To be honest, I have a handful of his releases but I agree with Coverdale and others when they complain about Robinson cashing in on releases that feature below par perfomances. Fans who are desparate for a memento of a particular line up are going to buy these CDs and it in no way shows the band off properly. "Wings Of A Russian Foxbat' is a classic example....I bought that to hear Tommy because I only had "Last Concert In Japan" to judge him on, and because the set list was appealing. Sadly, Coverdale sounds terrible on it, Glenn is awesome one minute and howling the next, Jon Lord's keyboards are up and down in the mix (hardly audible in Stormbringer).... Paicey is quality and the sound is very good but the clips Tero posted of "Lady Luck" and "Getting Tighter" sounded much better.
Some of Robinsons release have merit, like dragging "Play Me Out" and "Four on The Floor" onto CD (again though, Glenn isn't happy with FOTF) but if Robinson wants to do something useful, find a good quality JLT era Purple show and clean that up. Joe did a great job and with the interest in him stemming from HTP's success, there's no time like the present. The first show Purple played with Joe in Czechoslovakia featured JLT knocking out a great "Burn" to open the show and delivering one of the greatest "Highway Star"s I've ever heard. He certainly never topped it with Glenn or VOCR.

I doubt if he makes much out of any it - I'm certainly pretty sure he does it very much primarily for love rather than money.

Personally I'm grateful for all the stuff he's been involved in. I wouldn't've heard/got the majority of it otherwise - especially in the days pre-CDR, web & mp3 etc when boots were harder to get.

Not sure about the 'below par performance' thing. He doesn't go out of his way to find bad performances!!!

Myself, I've usually been pleasantly surprised by the releases and performances. Perhaps my expectations are low, but I don't particularly think for example that Coverdale's much (any?) worse on 'Foxbat' than say Made in Europe or Cal Jam (or other live stuff I've heard from his Purple days).

I still can't see what real harm the releases do - especially the remasters. But surely even stuff like 'Foxbat' & the Sonic Zoom series are 'official enough' that the Purps at least get the royalties they're entitled to.

I'm sure the releases don't tarnish reputations whether the performances are 'good' or 'bad' (whatever that means). As James says, they're only bought by specialists/collectors etc.

I'd even suggest that Tommy's reputation has been improved by 'Foxbat' & 'Tokyo', ironically after being damaged by 'Tokyo' in its original 'Last Concert' form.

BTW I've not heard before that IG has any particular problem with Simon - just as a matter of interest where did that come up? I'll go check the DPAS Q&A.

JLT/Purple live release? I'm pretty sure Simon couldn't do it, I believe Purple/management won't let him touch 'post re-union' stuff.

Finally, and I think it IS relevant, Simon seems like nice bloke (LOL).

Yo TC,

To justify my comments about David not sounding good on "Foxbat", check out "Lady Luck" and the howling horrorfest that is "Love Child". Even Foxbat's sleevenotes mention Coverdale turning in a "raw" vocal performance.

I have the "Mark three Final concerts" offering that Robinson put out, basically because I liked "Made In Europe" and it wasn't long enough, and that release allowed access to the full setlist. There's a world of difference between Coverdales renditions of "Highway Star" for example on that CD than there is on "Foxbat".

I'm not saying he goes out of his way to find duff shows, but if he gets his hands on something which he has a chance to release, it's my guess he's more interested in the quality of the recording than he is the performance.

Don't get me wrong....as I said, I'm very grateful for the "Play Me Out" CD release. Some of it just screams "cash in" to me though.

As for a JLT line up show, maybe as you say post reunion stuff is not an option, but I'm pretty sure Robinson wrote a Whitesnake biography, so if he can do that, I don't see a problem. He maybe wouldn't do it out of principle....he may well subscribe to the ludicrous but popular notion that Joe is a pop singer and had no place in purple. Or maybe he just takes offence at the fact Joe refers to him as "Simon ****ing Robinson"....

You could be right about Lady luck & Love Child James, it's been a while since I gave Foxbat a spin. As far as Highway Star is concerned, I've never heard a David version I thought was any good (LOL)!!!!

You may also be right about the sound quality thing, but I still haven't heard anything that Simon's been involved with that I find too bad!

I have to admit to a large extent the sound quality is probably my first consideration too if I'm paying for an album. (Though if there's a particularly good/interesting boot for TRADE I'm often more interested!)

By the way, while checking the DPAS Q&A I noticed someone actually suggests a JLT/DP live album. Simon says (!):
'My ability to work on archive releases ends with the reunion, their current manager is simply not interested in us getting involved with reunion era releases.'

(Couldn't find the IG problem with Simon Robinson thing on there.)

Speaking of the Deep Purple remastered series, Roger Glover writes "I have decided not to pursue the Burn remixes. Since I was not on the album originally, I felt slightly odd getting involved in the first place but I really thought I could help put a fresh sheen on the recordings. I listened to the digital transfers (done at Abbey Road) and started work on several songs, including the title track. After a couple of days struggling with the sounds we listened to the re-mastered versions on the Listen Learn Read On box set and I came to the conclusion that we were in fact bringing no real new insight to the music. Therefore I have backed off from the project. EMI will be carrying on with its plans but I have nothing to add".

It would be crazy if R.Glover should do anything with Burn or the other two. Glenn wouldn`t remaster In Rock either. Good producer though. Looking forward to hear Glenn`s work with Stormbringer!

Simon R doesn't get near the faders.He's not the main Overlord who approves all the new remixes/remasters.SR does the booklets & is very knowledgeable about whats kicking around in the DP Overseas Archive.I value SR's work in getting Purple family products on the shelves at a reasonable price.I don't believe SR is racking loads of cash from these Archive releases at the expense of fans.The Foxbat release was a King Buscuit Radio broadcast & the master tapes were probably not totally unmixed masters.So apart from some sonic EQ'ing it was as left by King Buscuit circa '76. I really rate Simon R's work on all the RemastersI don't believe Simon was ever remixing the audio side of things.The Booklets inside the Remasters are great. If it was left to the band we would still the Purple Remasters series wouldn't have got out the blocks in quite the same manner.

I write this 10 years on from the original comment.Simon R is a 'stout fellow'.Thanks S.R for Foxbat,the full Budokan Tokyo '75 set the MK3 studio remasters.Live In Paris, Kilburn Gaumont..Infact the whole D.P studio remasters series.Priced within reach of most of us.
I sumise Simon never gets hands on on the Mixing desks & leaves that to such pro's like Peter Mew.
I am not sure if EMI will do a 40th Anniversary job on 'Burn'.It is hard to see what can be added to the previous remaster.Hoping Blackers,DC & GH may do something new together?
