Icon34 Classic Rock - Jan 2009 - FUNK

the new issue has all their various "best of 2008" lists as chosen by their own writers.

coming in at number 38 for best album is FUNK.

"by revisiting his funk n' soul roots Hughes (soaring vocally between Sly Stone and nirvana) found dazzling form with this, his strongest, most characteristic set of original material in absolute aeons"

i'll add the top 10 tomorrow when i have more time.

Frank, Wake The Sleeper was 25th

Well I just have to wonder what the "Top" albums were Wolfy. There is no way these two rank where they do considering the absolute dung that I see daily in stores or hear on radio.

I'm guessing Gary Moore's new album isn't in there, considering he's just released another helping of the same blues he's been dishing out for the better part of the last 20 years. He's great at what he does, and his playing continues to be inspired even if his songwriting isn't. I just wish he'd throw fans another bone like he did with the excellent Dark Days In Paradise album which, while it wasn't a return to Gary's harder rocking past, dabbled in pop and rock with great modern production.

I was watching the live version of 'Empty Rooms' from 1987 on YouTube this morning...the last four minutes are a sock knocker offer if ever there was one.

Cheers...Todd

Top Ten albums 2008 according to CR.

1 Black Ice AC DC
2 Death Magnetic Metallica
3 Chinese Democracy GnR
4 Folklore & Superstition Blackstone Cherry
5 Runnin Wild Airborne
6 Sparkle Lounge Def Leppard
7 Good To Be Bad Whitesnake
8 I loved You Big Linda
9 Revelation Journey
10 Saints of LA Motley Crue

What surprised me most was GnR didn't finish top considering they are obsessed with that band at CR.

No Todd, Moore didnt get a mention though Joe Bonamassa was 27.

As Glenn isn't releasing a new studio album in 2009 then i expect to see these 2 in 2009's top lists....

Glenn Hughes - An Evening of Trapeze - Best Live Album, and Best DVD

Also Todd,

Gary Moore is in the regular feature they do called "Ever Meet Hendrix", where the star talks about names he met etc.

Probably 'cuz the list was done months ago, as they have a habit of keepin' things laying around on desks Pleased to see Big Linda get a mention amongst the usual suspects.

And yeah I totally agree; no excuses next time, if the GH Bilston box set is not amongst the list

Thanks Paul, I'll watch the mailbox for that issue. Always enjoy seeing articles on Gary. As for his blues stuff, I just wish he was as creative within that context as Joe Bonamassa is. Things started off great those first two blues albums Moore did, and then the monotony set in...

Cheers...Todd
