Icon35 Live in Melbourne (Manchester Lane) + Pix

Heard from a friend in Melbourne briefly, with a promise for a full review soon

Quote:
It was an incredible show!!!!!

I think Glenn was as impressed with the reception from us, as we were with his incredible talents.

The keyboard & strings complimented the sound really well.

Wow - how good is JJ!

I am over the moon, but just sorry I couldn't have been at both shows. But he did say he hoped to be back after his European tour ends in November.

Setlist:
Coast To Coast
I Found A Woman
This Time Around
Nights In White Satin
Last Mistake
This House
Frail
The Divine
This Is How I Feel
Whiter Shade Of Pale
Soul Mover
Mistreated

Encores:
Gettin' Tighter
You Keep On Moving

Apparently it was filmed by local cable TV - Channel 31 in Melbourne for their Asylum TV rock show programme

Any chance of a release? I definitely think there should be a CD/DVD, these gigs seem to be of unique value and I'm sure all of Glenn's fans would want to see them. I know I would!

Icon35 Melbourne pix and more...

Heard again from our friend in Melbourne, John White, here's his review as promised, plus a couple of pix with maybe some more to follow shortly
Lachlan Dolay, JJ and GLENN

You Keep On Moving

I travelled approx. 700km to Melbourne from my hometown to catch this gig. I had contacted the venue several days before hand to double check my booking and told them I was travelling from Canberra which they were surprised at and prompted them to give me an excellent seat up the front. The gig had not been publicised much, but for a brief mention in the Melbourne paper. However, this did not stop word from getting around and the venue was sold out on the night with a crowd size of around 300 people.

I arrived early, around 5.30pm, hoping to catch some of the sound check and hoping to see Glenn and JJ arrive.

There were already a dozen fans waiting outside and they said Glenn and JJ had already arrived. At about 5.40 we could hear them doing the sound check which went for about 15 minutes. Glenn did Whiter Shade Of Pale and Gettin' Tighter, as well as some improvisation and jamming.

Just before 6pm, JJ emerged and shortly after Glenn. Someone in the crowd was heard to call out, "Hey Glenn, good to see you", to which Glenn replied, "Thanks for coming along". They both went off separately (probably to their hotel rooms to change).

Just after 6pm the venue doors were opened and we eagerly entered. I headed down the front to find my spot. The venue continued to fill quickly after that. The vibe was that of great anticipation - it has been over 30 years since Glenn was last in Australia! The crowd were chomping at the bit!

During dinner there was much conversation amongst the fans, only a few having seen him previously during the 1975 Deep Purple tour. There was much discussion about favourite albums ranging from Trapeze to Soul Mover.

The stage was setup with a keyboard, two violins, a cello, JJ playing acoustic electric and Glenn on acoustic electric and electric bass. There were also 3 cameras set up for a shoot of the gig for Melbourne's Channel 31.

The band came on shortly after 8pm and it was as if a magic settled across the audience as they became entranced by the presence of the man.

He came out and chatted briefly to the audience, before starting with Coast To Coast. Between each song, after the rapturous applause eventually subsided, the audience were treated to further conversations including many witticisms from Glenn.

At one point during the retuning of Glenn’s guitar, he asked if we had any specific questions, to which I quickly called out "When are you coming back?", JJ gave a big smile to this and nodded saying "Good question". Glenn responded that he would love to make it back before Christmas this year as he had been humbled by the incredible reception he had received so far on this visit to Australia. Another fan asked, "What was it like at the Californian Jam?", Glenn replied, "It was an amazing situation, especially Ritchie Blackmores’ stunt of lighting gun powder in his speaker boxes which nearly blew us all off stage!"

As you can see by the song list, we were treated to old & new. The semi acoustic treatment of the songs & the addition of the string section was amazing.

At the end of an awesome gig many people came forward to shake Glenn’s hand and thank him for a fantastic performance; he then mentioned that he would see us shortly for a meet and greet session.

As you can imagine, the crowd were chuffed to be able to personally meet The Voice of Rock. Most of us couldn’t get enough time, but had to keep moving so everyone could say their thanks & get their items signed & photos taken.

The general feeling of everyone in the crowd was how incredible his voice was. We knew from recordings that he was good, but to hear what he could do live was absolutely mind blowing. It is certainly a night that none of us will ever forget.

Glenn, we are all waiting with open arms for your return. Please make it soon! You have shown that you are indeed our Soul Mover.

Yeah, I think that by now, that this new guy - John White -
has this fantastic photograph of himself and Glenn (with signed CD)
blown up to billboard size. He looks like a very happy "Crazy Person" to me

I hope that someday soon, all of us GHCPs will get to meet Glenn at a show,
and have their own personal version of this photograph with Glenn.

I also hope that you Australian-types really spread the word to everyone that you know,
between now and Glenn's next appearance there in a few months.

Hey.....how big is the Sydney Opera House?
Does it have enough seats for "Glenn Hughes - Part II?"

Apparently Glenn's appearance in Melbourne is to air soon on local Melbourne TV channel 31 on their Ayslum TV rock show programme. Not sure what "soon" means though!

Of note, for folks in New York, USA - the "Asylum TV" programming is broadcast in the tri-state area via the Access Central TV cable channel. So it's quite possible his segment could be featured for you there too

Icon35 Asylum TV Interview...

Here's the interview portion with GLENN from the Australian TV broadcast by Asylum TV, just prior to the gig at Manchester Lane in Melbourne on Sunday, June 18th, 2006.

Excuse the murky picture quality, but it has come all the way from down under
