"...when in June 1973, Ian Gillan left the band; unfortunately followed closely by Roger Glover.

Spectulation started as to whom should replace Ian Gillan and Roger Glover. Paul Rodgers was the immediate choice by the Music Press to replace Ian Gillan. However, a week later these reports were denied. This still left Deep Purple without a lead vocalist and bassist. The position of bassist was filled within a matter of weeks after Roger Glover's departure, by Trapeze bassist Glenn Hughes. The position for vocalist was left vacant for many weeks, during which the now almost finalised line-up continually listened to auditioning tapes sent in by budding vocalists. A Mr David Coverdale sent in a 'so-called' bad recorded tape of himself, which the band took immediate interest in. Days later he joined the band for an auditioning jam session. He was accepted by the rest of Deep Purple who later announced it to the Music Press. They invited the press to celebrate the arrival of their new vocalist and bassist at a castle on the Welsh border. This completing the new Deep Purple line-up, they began recording a new album in November 1973 (this album, later to be called 'Burn', was recorded at Montreux, Switzerland, using the Rolling Stones mobile unit, as was 'Machine Head').
In December 1973, Deep Purple performed some warm-up gigs with their new stage act, in Europe. February 1974 saw the release of the new album 'Burn'. Again this album soared to high positions in the charts. This new album had the latest line-up and a change of style of music, which featured two vocalists, one being David Coverdale and the other being Glenn Hughes. After the release of the album they set off State side for a lengthy tour and are about to engage themselves upon a full U.K. Tour, which starts rolling at Dundee Caird Hall on April 18th, then on to Edinburgh Odeon on the 19th - dates go through to Coventry Theatre on 28/29th."
