As always Damien- it's great to read your reviews. And once again I agree with your comments about the Purple show. I saw them a week or so ago- enjoyed it, but left feeling like something was missing. They are polished and happy on stage... I saw that as a positive the last few times I've seen them. But this time, I'm wondering if it's the rift and anarchy that I miss when seeing them perform! I absolutely love every musician in the band but the sum total just does not add up to my expectations of Deep Purple. Steve Morse definitely is within my top ten favorite guitarists- but I would rather hear him solo, with the Dregs or even with Kansas rather than Purple (sometimes at least). There are a few songs that this line up has written that are just fabulous, but when it comes to playing the classics, even when Steve trys to stay respectfully true to Ritchie's riffs... then comes the solo, and it's Deep Dregs or Deep Purple Lite- no matter how awsome the guitar solo is! I will always support this line up anyway- and I will keep going to there shows as long as they keep playing. Purple has morphed enough over the years that I feel comfortable saying that this line up really is Deep Purple... although I think Deep Purple was at it's best and kicked major ass in 1974!

Hi Mark -

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, the DP shows are always cool, but, as you said, "something is missing."

Hi Damien,

been enjoying your reviews but felt this one was too brief. Cool anyway. Agree totally about the setlist. I enjoyed the DP Costa Mesa show immensely and thought they sounded great. I introduced a coworker to Fingers to the Bone from Abandon and got goose bumps, they should be playing that one and whole ton of Morse material. They don't even do Ted or SIFLScreaming from Purpendicular anymore.

It was a great show. As always no surprises, but I always enjoy seeing them live, but this time I would have really enjoy a longer set from the opener: Vanilla Fudge!!!
