Icon33 JuneFest 10 Pix

Thanks to Tommy Hittmann for his report, lucky sod got to mix the VCR set!!

..."Today here in Las Vegas we had Junefest 10. With well over 16,000 people here was the lineup and the set list for The Voices Of Classic Rock

11:55 am - 12: 55 PM

Larry (Orleans)

Still The One
Dance With Me

Pat Travers

Snorting Whiskey
Dance With Me

Alex Ligertwood (Original Santana Singer)

Winning
Black Magic Woman

Joe Lynn Turner & Glenn Hughes

Hush
Mistreated
Stone Cold
Burn
Highway Star

Encore With All Members

Smoke On The Water

The sound for the Voices Of Classic Rock was mixed by me today. We all had a great time, hanging out in the trailer drinking, eating and just having a great time with Glenn Hughes, JLT, Pat Travers, Barry Dunaway (former Yngwie Malmsteen, Saraya, bass player), Alex Ligertwood.

These are the bands that followed in this order.

Joan Jett
Kansas
Jethro Tull
REO Speed Wagon
Bad Comany (featuring Paul Rogers and Simon Kirke)

We all watched most of the sets from the side of the stage. It was a great day, and it was a hell of a long day.

Tommy"

Radio coverage...

We checked with To The Max!'s Lisa Walker, who helped coordinate some of the VCR interviews with local Las Vegas radio station, KKLZ. She has been in touch with the station's PD, Ken Carson, as well as other KKLZ personalities.

She hopes to transcribe and/or make audio clips from it available. It's also a good idea to keep checking the rockforever.com site as they will often post audio from radio appearances by The Voices online.

Correction: I'm not sure when Alex joined Santana, but he was not the original singer. Ever hear of Greg Rolie?????????? The original singer/keyboardist who's voice is famous the world over for singing on the original Santana records from 69-73, Black Magic Woman, Oye Como Va, Evil Ways. etc... Alex Ligertwood had his hits with Santana such as Winning and Hold On (Nothing's the Same) in 1981, 1982. And of course Rolie later cofounded Journey with Neil Schon and was with them until 1981. Come to think of it, I'm sure you meant to say:"Alex the original singer of his Santana hits from the 80's" right?

Gregg Rollie

I'm sure Tommy in his excitement let it slip his mind that Rollie was the original.

He's still rockin' and his lastest CD is awesome. However, my most favourite recent release featuring Gregg is Abraxas Pool which is as Santana as you can get - David and I were lucky enough to see them live in SF a few years ago - unfortunately the project which also featured Neal Schon on guitar, only survived for this single release and they only played a handful of live dates - so we count ourselves lucky

Just got back from Las Vegas today after attending Junefest. What a great performance by the VoCR band. One correction to Tommy's set list, they did not do Stone Cold. Glenn was more amazing as usual, screaming his butt off!

I met up with Todd S. who lives in Vegas, Friday night and we attended the Deep Purple show at the Alladin Casino. Talked to Joe Lynn Turner who was also at the show. We even saw Vince Neil in the crowd.

Hopefully Todd will write in with a more complete review of the weekend. I'll leave that up to him, since he writes for some web sites.

I got a little bonus as I was leaving town. I stopped by the Hard Rock Casino to check it out and get a couple of souvineirs and I met Joe Walsh who was buying some stuff for himself. We chatted for just a minute.
I hope to send some photos of Glenn at Junefest soon.

VCR in Vegas

It was a great show! Chip and I set up shop about eight feet back from the barricade, just right of center. VCR came on a few minutes before noon, opening with Still The One and Dance With Me by Orleans' Larry Hoppen. I've always loved Still The One, and it got the crowd dancing. Can't remember the exact order of the rest of the setlist, but it was as follows:

Pat Travers...Snortin' Whiskey
Boom Boom (Out Go The Lights)
Alex Ligertwood...Winning (with Glenn)
Black Magic Woman
Joe Lynn Turner...Hush
JLT/Glenn Hughes...Highway Star
Glenn Hughes...Mistreated ("Anyone remember
California Jam?" Glenn shouted.)
JLT/GH and band...Smoke On The Water

They did not play Stone Cold or Burn. If they had played Burn, I would have had a coronary and would not be typing this right now. Funny, at the Deep Purple concert the night before I said hello to JLT. Purple had just finished their set with SOTW, and JLT winked and said "We'll be doing that one tomorrow, only better!" Joe was of course only joking, but I have to agree. Glenn's vocal acrobatics at the end gave me chills, and were some of the most intense utterings I've witnessed him sing in person. Glenn did not play bass at all, except for Mistreated. I was wondering who the bass player was - I had no idea it was Barry Dunaway!

The rest of JuneFest was great, with all the acts mentioned in Shirean's post. I can't believe more GH fans didn't make the drive over to see this concert. With tickets as low as $10 and only being a four hour drive?! Don't lament that Glenn will never play the West coast...he's been to Vegas twice in 6 months!

That's about all, folks. Wish you were here. Shirean, Chip has some photos he'll be sending you to post.

Cheers..Todd

Another review...

found this on the newsgroups...it certainly proves that these VCR gigs aren't doing any harm to Glenn, in fact quite the opposite

..."Pat Travers was good, but that group didn't wake up till Glenn Hughes took the stage. I didn't know who he was and would remember him if I'd heard him sing lead like that.

When he started singing Mistreated the hair on my arms and neck were standing straight up.

Never heard anything like that before. His voice was like a scream, but strong pure and a beautiful thing to hear and watch perform.

I was out in front maybe 10 feet left center. I still look like Alfalfa.

Hope VCR come back thru Vegas again.

I stuck around for Joan Jett, Kansas and Tull, but it was downhill after that."

As an aside....I also read the total attendence clocked in at a very impressive - 26,000 for the day.

I just returned from Sweden Rock Festival back to Holland (..12 hour drive and still checking this site hahaha...) and we were discussing a great gitarist to join up with Glenn. All of us went to see Pat Travers live a few weeks earlier and we all agreed it would be a dream team to see Glenn and Pat team up for an album and/or tour.

It is quite a coincidence I see a pic here
now Lets just hope it'll happen once.

Rock on!

Arjen
