HTP Studio Report in Classic Rock 38, March 2002

Hughes Turner Project

MTM Music rush release 'HTP'an album by the hughes-Turner Project on March 18. Lead by ex-Deep Purple vocalists Glenn Hughes and Joe Lynn Turner, the album also features contributions from former Whitesnake/Thin Lizzy guitarist John Sykes and former Mr. Big guitarist Paul Gilbert.

Recorded at producer Michael Scott's home studio in the hills near downtown Los Angeles, the album was co-produced by Michael, Glenn and Joe in a little over two weeks.

Hughes describes the project as "a real gem of a classic rock album," adding: "You have two ex-lead singers from Deep Purple, one of whom was in Rainbow and the other who went on to do an album with Black Sabbath. There has not been this outstanding type od duo lead singers since the classic line-up of Hughes and Coverdale in Deep Purple."

Both Glenn and Joe maintain that the fact that "HTP" wasn't recorded in a conventional studio allowed them a freeform and relaxed atmosphere, the way that Purple and Led Zeppelin rented houses or castles and used mobile facilities back in the 70s. And with both vocalists sharing a single mic between them, one would back off while the other sang lead. The drums, played by ex-Yngwie Malmsteen man Shane Galaas, were also recorded in the living room as well and everything was laid down on two 24-track Mackie hard disc machines.

The project's 12 tracks are all originals and were primarily written by Hughes, who also plays bass, in conjunction with his solo band's guitarist JJ Marsh. Hughes and Turner share the spotlight on each song and both sing lead on one ballad each. Paul Gilbert appears on the song 'You can't stop rock 'N' roll' and Sykes contributes guitar to 'Heaven's missing an angel'.

The other tracks are: Ride the storm, Against the wall, Devil's road, Missed your name, Mystery of the heart, Sister midnight, Better man, Fade away, Run run run and On the ledge
