Icon34 Mel Galley/Ken Grimley - front page of the Derby Evening Telegraph

Front page colour photo and a two-page report on pages 4&5, with photos. A really good in-depth article.
Well done to Wolfy and friends for the detection, and for turning this negative thing into something that seems to have turned out quite positive.

Hey Wolfy

What with the Chase Post in June/July & now the Evening Telegraph ......what next, the News of the World!!
All publicity is good publicity (?!)

Seriously, lets hope that is the end of the matter;it must have been very disturbing for Mel.
Well done on all your efforts

Here is Ken's autograph to Mel before he revealed his identity.

After giving Mel the Fender Strat copy you see in the pics above, Ken Grimley then went back home and brought another guitar out with him for Mel to sign. Mel duly signed it "To Ken, Best Wishes Mel Galley". I think that is a sign of Mel being a true gentlemen. How many other stars would be prepared to do that after what has been going on.

Hey Paul,

You are absolutely right; Mel is a class act, no if's, and's or but's! You guys did exactly the right thing by getting the word out through the press and the Internet. No cement boots need apply!

All joking aside, this is a sad case where the line in the sand between admiration and obsession gets crossed. You feel bad for Ken Grimley; he is living life vicariously through someone else (Mel) and has probably gone on with this for so long that he has lost Ken along the way.And I don't think he was portrayed as a monster at all by the newspaper or anyone here. They stuck to the details and left the psychoanalysis to those qualified for the task.

The cynic in me duly notes that "fan" is a shortened form of the word "fanatic". Take a step back and think about the people here on the forum. We enjoy Glenn's work, we go to great lengths to see him perform concerts, we maybe hope to shake his hand after the show and tell him what his music has meant in our lives, we discuss our passion with like minded people here. But when the lights come up and the music fades we go home to our everyday lives and families. And that is as it should be.

If Ken Grimley really needs help I hope he gets it. If he is just a con man then I hope he has gotten the message.

That was a gutsy thing for Mel to face him. I hope this closes the chapter on the "other Mel" !

Very eloquently put Bill. With purple prose like that, we might find you a job as the Express & Star's Stateside correspondent!

There's no doubting the fact that Mel has been really shaken by this confrontation – but I believe this will further inspire him to carry on reviving his career in music for the greater enjoyment of those of us who love him and his work.

WOLFY SMITH DOES IT AGAIN!!!! if you think about it mel did exactly the right thing by confronting AND THEN placating this lonely man -this reminds me of the john lennon video where he confronts the young man living in the woods on his estate yet still invites him in and feeds him -better to not set this guy off -wolfy smith your another person on here i hope to meet on day

I'm glad that we're a compassionate bunch here,
and we all realize that "Ken" needs some help..........

But it's one thing to say:
"Gee, I wish I was as famous as___ _________."
"Gee, I wish I was as rich as___ _________."
"Gee, I wish I could sing / dance as well as ___ _______."

It's a whole different kettle of fish to say:
"I AM....the famous, rich, and talented ___ _________."

Let's not forget just WHO was victimized by these actions.
And I'm sure that Mel was shaking with worry because
this guy might have gotten very angry at him,
for bursting this fantasy bubble, that he was living in.
The important fact is that this was stopped NOW.

And I'm glad from your report, wolfy, that the UK newspapers aren't reporting
this situation as some joke, because it can become serious, if not handled correctly.

WHICH IT WAS !!!!!!

Something that may not have occurred to you all (its only just occurred to me although thats nothing new).

Whatever your view on Grimley, whether you see him as funny, pathetic, nasty or a harmless old fool think about this-hes stuffed a load of young bands with nonsense and false promises but i wonder how many old whitesnake programmes/CDs hes ruined by signing them? And worse, what if hes signed anyones vintage valuable guitar? Theyd have to get the signature removed professionally perhaps.

Also it devalues anything mel may have genuinely signed as theres always the element of doubt now.

Even without being involved in anything of this, I get very upset every time I read this story. Still I can't imagine how upset Mel must be! Respect for the courage confronting the impostor, Mel - and Paul for spreading the story and making it as it appears very public.

Grimley obviously needs help, but here's hoping for a Happy End for all parties involved to settle this once and for all.

For days, terrible things have happened here in Vienna, involving people who obviously need psychological help, but have been neglected or even turned away by the (so-called!) specialists (psychiatrists), in one case even been given a clear mental slate, which led to catastrophies - a cannibal murder, a six-year old girl being raped on a school toilet and a man randomly pushing people on the tracks of an underground station.

Why do things like these have to happen, before anything is ever done to try and prevent them?

I'm really upset about these cases, but I don't intend to compare any of those directly to the Grimley case.

It just shows that it's good to have the courage and take action before the situation gets out of hand. You never know what could have happened.

But the real problem is of course much bigger.... show me a functioning social- or health insurance system in the whole world if there is any. Mission impossible - there isn't. No, I'm not going to dig any deeper here. Too OT.

Sorry, if I got you upset. Just wanted to get this off my chest...

Thanks.

Christian

Icon34 Mel Galley" Sorry Ken Grimley" Came To Buy A Bentley From Me!!!!

Hi everyone, We own a car sales forecourt in derby and around five years ago we had loads of Bentleys And Rolls Royces in. Ken grimley came in to our forecourt wearing a very smart suit and passing himself of as mel gallery and telling us that he was the lead guitairst for whitesnake, we also told us that he has just come back from america touring and that he had a big 10 bedroom mansion in derbyshire. He was very convincing and we had no reason to doubt him. he seemed a really nice guy. he came over a period of three days hanging his noise over this black bentley and sat in our office telling storys about famous bands he had played with and hung out with. he drank our coffee and consumed our biscuits. he was also doing the odd magic tricks and he was quite entertaining. im shocked that he is not the real Mel because he seemed really genuine. in the end he told me he will be back with a bag of cash for the bentley and we never seen him again.

My overall opinon of this guy is that he needs help and i feel sorry for all the people he as tricked in to thinking they have met a rockstar. at the end of the day everyone is equal it dont matter about money or fame we all have the same blood running through our vains. it dont make ken a bad person of what he as done there are worst people out there. i hope its learnt him a lesson.

Icon31 No really, we're serious!

The DPAS has entered another message in the Grollywood section about Mel and his impostor. No jokes about cheesy bald wigs either....it shows the front page of the Derby Evening Telegraph and sticks to the facts.

Getting the word out....the best solution for the problem!

I've been following this story with a mixture of mild amusement and a lot of horror. This Grimley bloke is indeed a sad case, and I can't begin to imagine what it must have felt like for Mel.

However, Mel's calm & reasoned reactions only call for respect. In the same situation, I'd probably have chinned the bloke

Having had the pleasure of meeting the real Mr Galley at quite a few Trapeze gigs in the 70's, I always remember him as a nice, genuine guy who always took time out to talk to a bunch of spotty fans before & after the gigs. So his reactions to this just go to prove he's still a real gent (and still my favourite guitar player, 30+ years on....)
