I'm too young to comment about the 70's, but I heard that Hughes and Coverdale not only saved Deep Purple, but launched them into a whole new world of success.

Me, too
(Uhhhhh, that's a lie, Steve.)

I don't think that "saved" would be the right word to use,
even though those of us here are Glenn Hughes Crazy People,
and (mostly) David Coverdale fans.

I like to think that when GH and DC became Purple boys,
they added a new ingredient to the soup mix ~ funk and blues ~
that helped to change DP, and have the sound "evolve."
But you still had the same solid base of Lord, Paice, and Blackmore.
Three guys who didn't need to be saved.

There was a 4 CD set that came out a few years ago, called:
"Shades of Deep Purple. "
Over the years, that's what I think that that band has done.
So it was really turning the page, for a new chapter,
for a new, different shade of purple.........
