Hughes/Satriani/Smith

Will this album be released in 2017?

maxvnyc May-02-2017 6:19 AM

Doubtful. He is already releasing BCC in September. It'd be too crowded to release it around the same time frame. Most likely March-April 2018. For some reason, marketing people think that new releases sell best in the spring and fall and not during the summer or winter months. Go figure...

danielb Jun-05-2017 2:27 AM

Any update here?

jerklund Jun-05-2017 10:14 PM

Hej Daniel,
thanks for asking... I'm curious too. Would be nice to know at least was it finished, is it ready to be released or still a work in progress... :)

...from a recent interview with Joe S.

What’s up ahead for you as far as new music and your next album?

I’m putting the finishing touches on a new solo record. It’s a big, fat, rock and soul album that I’m very excited about. We recorded at Sunset Sound in Los Angeles and at Sammy’s studio up here in the Bay Area, with Mike Fraser producing. It will be released on Legacy/Sony early next year.

jerklund Jun-12-2017 11:46 PM

So it will have Joe Satriani instead of GLENN HUGHES written on capital letters on the cover? :)

No vocals, bass only.

Joe Satriani Album 2018

Joe Satriani is releasing a new album titled "What Happens Next" on January 12, 2018. Apparently Glenn plays bass throughout with Chad Smith on drums completing the trio.

I have two questions: who's on vocals? I assume it's Glenn.

Is this the "secret" project Glenn has been referring to? I assume Yes.

No vocals, all instrumental... Glenn on bass... and Yes, although it's not been much of one :D

It's a shame it's not a band project with Glenn singing. That could have been interesting. I don't think Glenn is appreciated as much as he could be for his bass playing. Maybe this album will give him the chance to shine and let his playing get the credit it deserves.

maxvnyc Sep-18-2017 10:52 AM

Considering the state of music industry these days, Joe is taking a chance, and limiting himself, releasing an instrumental rock album. Hopefully big names, like Glenn and Chad, will give him a boost. But if songs are strong, why not give them a little boost with good vocals?

Even though Glenn is not singing, I commend him for trying different things all the time and not staying stale.

chutsler Sep-18-2017 5:33 PM

All 'instrumental' albums are nothing new for Satriani! Think it be a BIGGER seller if Glenn was 'singing and playing bass... :D

He's also mentioned he will tour with a famour guitarist in 2018. I suspect this is another guitarist than Satriani, seeing that he will embark on a G3 tour?

chutsler Sep-19-2017 9:42 AM

I've never been one to 'listen' to an ENTIRE album of 'instrumentals'.....it was Glenn's voice that made me a Trapeze fan!!

willem Sep-20-2017 2:18 PM

I have seen Joe Satriani multiple times and I can say that I don't miss the vocals in his music. Like the Steve Morse Band, Joe Satriani has something very special: the music tells it all. Only the very, very best have the ability to do this. Plus Glenn is one of the best bass-players out there: so I am looking forward to them touring together: music without restrictions!

jerklund Sep-21-2017 12:59 AM

Hmm...there are no famous guitar players besides Tony Iommi :D

I can certainly see how some people are turned off by instrumental music, especially in comparison with music that has such vocal soul and lyrical content as Glenn's, but I think its worth mentioning that very little instrumental music is made with rhythm sections as groovy as Glenn and Chad. As far as lyrical guitarists go Joe is right up there, he does everything to add extra nuance like a vocalist would.

I would imagine, were they to tour, there would have to be some vocal element and that would be a real treat. Joe was a great team player when he worked with Purple and approached that material with great reverence. I'm sure we'd see some really cool power trio versions come to pass.

Exciting!
