What are you listening to ?

hey folks,
i hope that everybody is having a lovely day. i thought that i'd take a moment and tell some of you what other's of you already know... Jeff Kollman rocks ! I've bought a couple of his albums recently and have really enjoyed the stuff. I'm listening to "Guitar Screams Live" a good bit right now and have made a misc. cd w/ some of the cuts on there such as "clap hands", "fool for you stockings" , "shredding skin" and"creepy spider". i also recently got Cosmosquad "live at the Baked Potato" and that is very good as well. when i wear these two out, i see that Jeff has a few more available on i-tunes, and i'll pick another one to jam to next. the song "oops i spilled my beer" from jeff and chad's new band, the meatbats is also very cool.
also something of interest to folks here i would think is Joe Lynn Turner. I just bought his "Holy Man" cd and have really been enjoying that as well.
so, brothers and sisters, while we await the arrival of our beloved FUNK, i just thought i'd throw a few other things out there for your consideration. so that's what i've been listening to, what about you ?
peace,

I've really been enjoying the new album from Dokken, "Lightning Strikes Again". The current line-up has really come into its own, and guitarist Jon Levin has really managed to recapture some of their classic sound.

Otherwise, I'll probably pick up the new Whitesnake today - it's getting good reviews - and then, of course, Glenn's new one is coming soon!

JLT's Holy Man is superb, purplemusic

I'm listening to Gabriella Cilmi's Lessons To Be Learned. I first heard her voice on an advert on UK television and actually saw her sing live yesterday on a TV programme. Absolutely in love with her voice - and she's only 16!! Stunning, Italian, wicked voice and lives in Melbourne. Sigh! I hate her already :p

Motorpsycho - Little Lucid Moments Prog galore!
Asia - Phoenix yes, for the last two weeks
Whitesnake - Good To Be Bad

toadsterama Apr-24-2008 5:36 PM

I've been on an old-school thrash/speed metal kick lately, so I've been spinning a few golden oldies by the likes of Exodus, Metal Church, Possessed, Vio-lence, Death Angel and Overkill.

I've also been soaking in the extremely satisfying new Asia album 'Phoenix'. Even after all these years, John Wetton continues to be a revelation.

The new Bruce Springsteen album 'Magic' is more appealing to me than any of his other albums in recent (and hell, not so recent) memory. I heard it playing overhead at my local record haunt, and I walked right over to the display and picked up a copy. Well worth checking out. It will get a lot of play this summer.

And the new Whitesnake is a riffalicious piece of hard blues rock that, so far, is pretty good.

Cheers...Todd

Lead me to the Yellow Rainbow....

I don't have a CD player at home but I do have one in the car which is where my listening is done these days. I have been immersing myself in The Move and the 40th Anniversary reissues of their catalog. The 2 CD release of their debut is amazing; these guys could do anything from pure pop to doo wop to psychedelia and they even found the original stereo mixes and a boatload of extras. "Shazam", their second LP is fabulous; killer originals and imaginative cover material make for a great listen. "Message From The Country" their final LP sees Roy Wood, Jeff Lynne and Bev Bevan swinging from gritty rhythm and blues to 50's pastiches to tunes that echo John Lennon and probably influenced Todd Rundgren just a bit!

Other selections that have gotten major airtime on the road;

Frank Marino - From The Hip
Pete Townshend - Gold
Robin Trower and Jack Bruce - Seven Moons
Govt Mule - High And Mighty
Govt Mule - Mighty High...some of the reggae grooves on this will cave in your head!
Free - Live
Ann Wilson - Hope And Glory
Glenn Hughes - Live In Australia
Pat Travers - Power Trio 2
Mountain - Over The Top

Bill, I just caught Gov't Mule not too long ago, supporting the "High N Mighty" album. Great show, and I downloaded the particular concert I was at off their website, complete with liner notes and superb sound quality. Great album, great band. And yes, the remix album is a hoot!

Unring that bell...

Cheers....Todd

Paul Gilbert's "Acoustic Samurai" is playing right now. Yesterday was a few Glen Phillips (of Toad the Wet Sprocket), Nickle Creek, and Ike Reilly cds that arrived in the mail that day; Wednesday was the new King's X, which was preceeded by a few days of listening to entire King's X collection.

One note on Glen Phillips - I never see his name misspelled as "Glenn". Maybe Hughes should just drop the second "n" in his first name since nobody seems to ever get it right anyway! (Of course, that doesn't help his last name, which will continue to be butchered. How does a simple name like "Glenn Hughes" get misspelled so often???)

captmidnite1962 Apr-26-2008 10:33 PM

Let me super size my order of Free!

Hey Chuck,

I wasn't even aware of these expanded versions of "Back Street Crawler" and "Fire And Water". That's what happens when ICE magazine, my main source of CD release information, vanishes into the ether.

I did a quick check on Amazon UK to get the song line-ups. The Kossoff album gets the full treatment and you can now savor the Olympian workout that was "Time Away" without having to drop a hundred bucks on the "Songs Of Yesterday" box set. They put that entire John Martyn session on there..completists rejoice!

And Free basically cut "Fire And Water" twice; If I recall correctly Chris Blackwell wasn't happy with the first version and had the band remix the album. Add some BBC tracks and live sessions and four different versions of "All Right Now" and you have a stocking stuffer of the highest order!

Bring on the FUNK!!!

This is a very interesting thread to me. I noticed an old outdated one from a few years back, and i almost started a new thread myself, but waited too long and purplemusic beat me to it. Lots of great stuff mentioned so far.

I just recently obtained my copy of Hughes/Downes "Work Tapes".
(In anticipation of the new release, i've been listening to a lot of Glenn's other cd's lately too.)
I finally got my copy of Ken Hensley's "Blood On The Highway". (I was way behind on buying that one. I don't have much extra money these past few years.)
I've been jammin' Robin Trowers lastest releases a bunch. Seven Moons, Another Days Blues, Living Out Of Time- the studio release and the live dvd. (He is my personal favorite.)
Just bought Dug Pinnick's new one "Strum Sum Up", listened to it 3 times so far, and awaiting the new King's X release.
Porcupine Tree "We Lost The Skyline" and "Nil Recurring" - Nil is pretty hard stuff.
Alvin Lee "Saguitar" - recommended for all 10 Years After/Alvin fans. It has 3 great new blues tunes and some jammers as well. By the way, Ten Years After "Now" cd is good also-even without Alvin.
Paul Rodgers "Live In Glasgow"
Ian Hunter "Rant"
Gov't Mule "High & Mighty"- i didn't go for the newer reggae versions release, sorry.
I have the new UFO "Monkey Puzzle" but enjoyed the previous release better: "You Are Here".
Kenny Wayhne Shepherd "The Place You're In" (2004 release). - i don't have the new blues cd/dvd release just yet.
Eagles new 2cd (i have to be in the right mood for this one, it's pretty mellow).
I'm into some other genres too such as americana/bluegrass/folk styles.
Railroad Earth live 2cd "Elko"
Donna The Buffalo live 2cd "The Great American Ballroom" (great down to earth festival band-check them out on myspace, etc)
Yonder Mountain String Band "Mountain Tracks Vol. 4" - another great festival favorite.
DJ & TT ( Donna Jean & The Tricksters- Donna sang in the Grateful Dead in the 70's, and the Zen Tricksters are a current Grateful Dead tribute band, now both are together making music, and just released their first cd.) --Yes, i'm an old deadhead, and i miss Jerry
I have cd's scattered all over the place and i could go on & on.
I listened to an old Screamin' Cheetah Wheelies cd the other day, some Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker Band, Moody Blues live 2cd "Lovely To See You".
Ever heard of Jupiter Coyote? They are very smooth, kinda like a "pickin' " Allman Brothers style. The Guitarist put a banjo neck on a guitar body.
I still don't have the new David Gilmour yet, some things i have to keep putting off.
I'm looking forward to getting the new Whitesnake, the new Candlebox, the new Heep in June, and the new U2 in October.
I just found out Paul Rodgers w/Queen release an album Sept 1st.
I like some country too, but i've already said more than my share.
Can you tell i'm a huge music lover ??
