Luis Carlos Maldonado

For those of you who have had a chance to listen to GLENN's latest voice message over at his MySpace page, you would of heard him make reference to a guitar player that will be joining the ranks for the upcoming recording sessions for the next solo record, by the name of Luis Carlos Maldonado.

Hailing from the San Francisco Bay Area, he is a gifted guitar player having grown up in a musical family, playing guitar since he was 7 and studying it since he was 12. He attended classical guitar master classes at the University of Arizona and later graduated from College in CA. with 5 different certificates in recording, recording production, live sound, midi, keyboards, and engineering. All before the age of 21.

Although he has had a heavy latin and jazz background from an early age, rock is also a stable in his musical bag of tricks and so some of the bands that have had a huge influence on his playing style include Automatic Man, Isley Brothers, Argent, Sly and the Family Stone, Heart, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Terry Reid, Lucifers Friend, Free, The Nazz, The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Stray Dog, The Faces and The Sweet to name just a few!!

He has quite a resume/CV:

He has recorded and toured with Pat Monahan (Train), Anna Nalick, John Waite (Baby's, Bad English), Tremolo, Michael Schenker, UFO, Holly Palmer, Tim Alexander (Primus), Buck Johnson Band and many more. He has collaborated with producers Patrick Leonard (Madonna, Jeff Beck), Charlie Midnight (James Brown, Hillary Duff), Jamie Houston (Macy Grey, Jessica Simpson), Steve Fontano (Santana) and many others. Luis currently plays guitar for recording artists Fata Morgana, Emma Burgess, Arie Shine, Pat Monahan, Glenn Hughes, Anna Nalick and Cindy Alexander.

Luis is also completing work on a soon-to-be-released album of his own.

Meantime, you can find his full discography and lots of other info about him at his web site, plus he has a couple of different MySpace pages.

Luis is also involved in a side project by the name of Fata Morgana - based in Arizona - their latest release is mixed by none other than Ralph Patlan - you may remember San Francisco native, Ralph, from the 1997 Tommy Bolin Tribute weekend in Denver, Colorado, where he played guitar for GLENN during the 2-night headline gigs.

As mentioned here, Luis will be promoting his own band's ("Into The Presence") new album in 2009.

In that regard, if you live in the L.A. area, be sure and head down to The Roxy (Hollywood) every Friday night throughout the month of January, as he'll be there playing with Into The Presence. They plan on having their debut album released very soon, with a bunch of Stateside shows to support it.

Look forward to hearing more and will certainly let you know when I do

Into The Presence are actually a two man band with guests featured on bass and cello!

Here's their bio...

Quote:

Drummer Tim Alexander (Primus, A Perfect Circle) and guitar player/vocalist Luis Maldonado (Pat Monahan, Glenn Hughes, John Waite, UFO, Anna Nalick, Emma Burgess) wanted to make a recording that could be performed live without any compromises. They desired to capture the warmth and depth of a record that enters the books not for a song or two, but as a free-standing work of art that embraces the quickly dying idea of an "album". Luis and Tim brought in bass player Paz Lenchantin (A Perfect Circle, Entrance), and cellist Ana Lenchantin (Trent Reznor, Papa M, The Eels, Brian Wilson, Sparkle Horse, Gnarls Barkley) to add their amazing talents to create the sound of Into The Presence. They have just completed their self-produced, self-titled debut in true analog, relying on tape machines and vintage outboard gear instead of computers. The performances embodied are full-take performances where the word "comp" meant nothing more than chords being played. Anything digital was forbidden from entering the signal path -- from tracking throughout mastering -- a classic approach Tim and Luis took very seriously from the onset. The albums they referenced while recording spell out a who's who in the pages of mega-rock history: Queen's A Night at the Opera, Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti, Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, AC/DC's For Those About to Rock, Jeff Buckley's Grace, Peter Gabriel's Security, and Black Sabbath's Masters of Reality to name a few. Live performances pay tribute to the musicianship of these artists in a fresh and engaging way. The songs are highly accessible, yet deceptively complex as the layers are peeled away. Always at the forefront are Luis' incredible vocals and haunting sense of melody. Luis was accepted as a child prodigy at the age of twelve into the University of Arizona where he was constantly surrounded by adults in master classes, allowing him to master his instrument and develop his voice at a very early age. Tim Alexander's own recorded legacy is highly revered, his rhythms being a regular topic of discussion amongst drum blogs and publications. Drum magazine flat out declared him one of "the most influential drummers of all-time." The group's individual histories encompass diverse experience in music performance, from classical competition to extensive rock touring, recording, and writing. Their collective trials, loves, desires and influences have been united on Into the Presence in the sole spirit of making great rock music that will be sought after and explored with passion.

Hope so; will let you know if I hear anything further.

captmidnite1962 Mar-09-2009 5:43 PM

Very cool...

I see that I have multiple opportunities to see Luis and his band here in NYC....so let me make that happen!

I note with some amusement that Luis is credited with being "Ex-UFO". I have to wonder what the guitar interplay onstage between Luis and Michael Schenker must have been like.

Enough of the past...forward into the future!!

tony g Mar-10-2009 4:27 PM

thanks david
