Glenn Hughes & Living Colour - Winter UK/EUROPE Tour 2016

GLENN HUGHES was recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of the Mark III line up of DEEP PURPLE. He spent key years of his career as the beloved bassist and vocalist of the group, recording on the classic albums: Burn, Stormbringer, and Come Taste The Band. Hughes and other members of DEEP PURPLE were in attendance to receive the honor. The ceremony was recorded for television and will receive it’s broadcast premiere via HBO on Saturday, April 30th, 2016.

Vocalist/bass guitarist/songwriter GLENN HUGHES is a true original. No other rock musician has carved such a distinctive style blending the finest elements of hard rock, soul and funk. Stevie Wonder once called Hughes his favorite white singer. The first important band Hughes was a member of that achieved notable success was TRAPEZE. In 1973, Hughes joined DEEP PURPLE. The trailblazing hard-rock legends had just weathered the departure of vocalist Ian Gillan and bass guitarist Roger Glover, but guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, keyboardist Jon Lord and drummer Ian Paice continued with the addition of Hughes and David Coverdale. Since 1992, Hughes has toured extensively in Europe, Japan and South America in support of solo albums, but more recently has been involved with award winning supergroups’, BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION with guitar star Joe Bonamassa, keyboard player Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater) and drummer Jason Bonham, son of the late Led Zeppelin legend John Bonham and CALIFORNIA BREED, who also featured both Hughes and drummer Jason Bonham.

The New York rock band LIVING COLOUR, with its hard-hitting songs and expert musicianship, had all the ingredients for success when it first approached the music industry. Yet record labels didn’t know what to do with the band, for the simple reason that all four of its members were black.

Formed in 1984, led by guitarist Vernon Reid, with Corey Glover (vocals), Will Calhoun (drums) and Doug Wimbish (bass), the band’s music is a creative fusion influenced by free jazz, funk, hard rock and heavy metal. After months of touring and a little push from MTV, their second single from Vivid, ‘Cult of Personality‘ helped propel LIVING COLOUR into the mainstream along with an opening slot for the Rolling Stones Steel Wheels tour, garnering their first Grammy in 1989 for ‘Best Hard Rock Performance’. Other songs from Vivid that fared well on radio and MTV were ‘Glamour Boys,’ which became a Top 40 hit, ’Open Letter (to a Landlord),’ and ‘Funny Vibe,’ a song about racism, which included a guest appearance by the rap group Public Enemy.

Their sophomore effort 1990’s Time’s Up including the alt-rock classic ‘Type’, bluesy R&B ‘Love Rears Its Ugly Head’, and the funky ‘Elvis Is Dead’, rewarded the band with their second Grammy, spearheading a wave of eclectic and critically acclaimed bands who challenged racial conventions. With their diverse range in musical style, they fit perfectly on the inaugural Lollapalooza tour. 1993’s Stain, showed a darker, heavier side of the band with songs like ‘Go Away‘ and ‘Leave It Alone‘. After a brief break in 1995, the band got back together to tour, and record 2003’s Collide0scope and 2009’s The Chair In The Doorway.

The impetus of LIVING COLOUR’s new album, Shade originated from a centennial performance of Robert Johnson’sPreachin’ Blues’ at the legendary Apollo Theatre in New York City. Shade, to be released in the fall of 2016, is “the sound of a band coming to terms with its shadows and light,” as described by Vernon Reid. “From the blue pulpit of Robert Johnson to the mean red streets of Brooklyn… Shade is the next chapter of a unique American journey.” Corey Glover portrays Shade as an “homage to the blues” that links the band to their disparate roots and includes a cover of Notorious B.I.G.’sWho Shot Ya?’ which links to current social issues important to the LIVING COLOUR ethos.

DEEP PURPLE

Inductees: Ritchie Blackmore, David Coverdale, Rod Evans, Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Glenn Hughes, Jon Lord, Ian Paice

If there were a “Mount Rushmore Of Hard Rock” it would only have three heads: Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. They are the Holy Trinity of hard rock and metal bands and Deep Purple’s non-inclusion in the Hall is a gaping hole which must now be filled. Deep Purple combined outstanding musicianship with dozens of FM radio smashes. Three separate incarnations of the band have made spectacular albums culminating with Deep Purple In Rock, which along with Led Zeppelin II and Black Sabbath’s Paranoid, CREATED the genre of hard rock music. Deep Purple have sold over 100 million albums and their flagship track “Smoke On The Water” eclipses “Satisfaction,” “Born To Run” and “Smells Like Teen Spirit” as the Number One Greatest Guitar Riff Of All Time. It is the riff that inspired tens of millions of guitarists to pick up the instrument and only Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony gives it a run for the money as far as recognizability and badassed-ness. Genius guitarist Ritchie Blackmore fused countless powerhouse riffs with a deep knowledge and appreciation of classical music. Keyboardist Jon Lord kept pace on the classical and rock fronts and cemented the guitar/keyboard axis that defined the band’s sound and along with Zeppelin and Sabbath gave birth to an entire genre. Ian Gillan’s vocal range was unparalleled and the boiler room rhythm section of Roger Glover and Ian Paice cemented the classic lineup. Original vocalist Rod Evans and the David Coverdale/Glenn Hughes line-ups also created masterpieces of their own. Deep Purple are and were a band of supremely talented musicians and songwriters. They are one of the titans and pioneers of their genre, and one of the hardest pillars in the Temple Of Rock. Their groundbreaking albums and ear drum breaking live shows are the stuff of legend and make them long overdue for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Glenn Hughes USA Tour 2016

Vocalist/bass guitarist/songwriter Glenn Hughes is a true original. No other rock musician has carved such a distinctive style blending the finest elements of hard rock, soul and funk. That astonishing voice is Hughes’ calling card. He’s known as a singer’s singer. Stevie Wonder once called Hughes his favorite white singer.

Hughes, a native of Cannock, England, absorbed all kinds of influences, including early British hard rock, the Beatles and, most importantly, American soul and R&B. The sleek Motown sound from Detroit and the gritty Stax/Volt sound from Memphis left their mark on him.

The first important band Hughes was a member of that achieved notable success was Trapeze. The band’s early ’70s albums included Medusa, Trapeze and You Are The Music… We’re Just The Band.

In between his hectic schedule, Hughes also found time to publish a book, “Glenn Hughes : The Autobiography – From Deep Purple To Black Country Communion“, the Number 1 best seller is available in both hard and soft cover editions from all good retailers.

So make no mistake. The Voice of Rock never left the building.
